From our office in Southern California, we employ fundamental and algorithmic trading strategies in order to generate returns within a quantitatively informed risk management framework.  Our combination of quantitative finance and engineering fundamentals uniquely positions us to derive profits in electricity markets.  Harnessing the power of data—through theory and technology—we deploy capital efficiently and effectively.

After a successful run as a proprietary trading operation, we have opened our doors to outside capital. We are not your typical investment firm, however, as we strive to embody the following core values in work and life:

  • Humility - We know a lot but we don't pretend to know it all, and we're not afraid to admit mistakes or ask for help.

  • Hard Work - We are serious about our work and put in significant effort to succeed.

  • Healthy Lifestyle - We are also serious about work-life balance and maintaining overall health in order to produce and execute at our best.

  • Honor - We value our clients, our service providers, and each other.  We work for the team, not ourselves.

  • Healthy Conflict - We resolve conflict quickly, directly, and respectfully.

Dave Hicks is the Portfolio Manager at Perast.  Previously, he worked for five years as a quantitative analyst at Noble Americas Energy Solutions, a US electricity subsidiary of the global commodities trader Noble Group.  There he studied the wholesale electricity market and eastern power grid, proposing trades and building trading tools.  He later started his own trading operation in Perast Capital Management, where he has generated enviable returns through multiple strategies for five years.

Dave has bachelor’s and master’s degrees with honors in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master of Financial Engineering degree from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He once sported a milk mustache in Sports Illustrated for a scholar-athlete award and is pretty much a math wizard:  he made perfect math scores on the ACT, SAT, and GRE.  In his spare time, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two boys.  He also competes in triathlons and is an IRONMAN finisher.

James Ramsey has worked at Perast Capital Management for four years as head of investor relations, technology, and market affairs.  He designs and implements systems and software and he uses them to analyze the electricity markets.  Before joining Perast, he spent almost a decade in technical sales for technology companies, where he gained broad expertise in hardware and software systems.  If it can be done and he doesn’t already know how to do it, James will figure it out—by learning himself or recruiting the right help.  He received his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Texas A&M University, where he graduated with honors.  He enjoys playing soccer and exercising, and he is active in his church.
